She’s an aspiring human rights lawyer
A wannabe lawyer currently studying for her masters degree at the University of Nottingham has been crowned Miss Universe Great Britain.
It was third time lucky for 25-year-old Anna Burdzy, who this weekend saw off competition from 34 others at the Miss Universe Great Britain finals in Newport.

Burdzy is currently studying for her postgrad degree in human rights law and has ambitions to work at the United Nations or the Foreign Office, having also floated the idea of doing a training contract. For now, it’s likely she’ll be focused on all things beauty, and becoming the first Brit to take home the Miss Universe crown in the competition’s 65-year history.
Beauty pageant site Missosology reports Burdzy said:
Winning the title really means everything to me. I first competed in 2014 when I came first runner up so this represents the culmination of three years hard work.
Whatever happens in the 2017 finals, let’s hope we won’t have a repeat of the 2015 competition’s fiasco, when presenter Steve Harvey famously announced the wrong winner…
Though law, traditionally a conservative profession, seems totally disconnected from the flashy pageant scene, Burdzy is one of many budding solicitors and barristers straddling both words.
Legal Cheek wrote a feature about five of them last year, but they’ve just kept on coming. There was the family law PhD student who went on to become Miss Cambridge (you can read Legal Cheek’s interview with her here), plus: the Miss Cheshire finalist who studied law at the University of Oxford; a transgender law student punting for glory in Miss Inspiration UK; and a Bolton law student crowned Miss North West.
There’s more: though Miss England 2017 was this month won by aspiring ontology clinical researcher Stephanie Hill, finalists from the likes of Bolton and Cheshire were law students. Oh, and two of the Miss Wales finalists are law students (one at Cardiff University, one at Swansea University). Phew!
