And a £100 voucher
The highest court in the land has launched its first ever student writing competition.
Judged by a Supreme Court justice, the competition asks year 12 and 13 students to submit 1,000-1,500 word answers to one of the following questions:
* Has the law reached a fair balance between protecting the rights of individuals, whilst still safeguarding society against crime and terrorism?
* Has the law successfully adapted to combat discrimination or are there areas where it needs to go further to protect minorities?
* Is it justifiable that public interest can override an individual’s right to privacy?
A list of useful cases for each question, and more information about the race to legal writing victory, can be accessed here.
Not only will entering the competition, in the Supreme Court’s words, “look great on your UCAS form”, there are some pretty exciting prizes to be had. The third placed entry will win a £50 book voucher, second place a £75 book voucher and first place a £100 book voucher — and tea with a Supreme Court justice.
When we got in touch with the court to find out more about this amazing first prize, a spokesperson was unable to tell us the identity of the tea-drinking justice, as this will be agreed later on.
However, he could tell us the meet-up will be hosted at the Westminster building itself rather than in a coffee shop. Luckily for the winner, Supreme Court staff are hot drink-making pros. Days before Lord Neuberger and friends played host to the biggest case of 2016, the Brexit legal challenge, the Supreme Court forecasted its public café would serve around 2,400 cups of tea and coffee across the four-day hearing.
The competition will close on 30 September. A winner will be announced in November.
