The lawyers who handled one of the biggest M&A deals of last year share their experiences with 50 students
On the evening of Wednesday 21 June Legal Cheek is teaming up with elite City law firm Macfarlanes to hold an event which will provide an insight into the firm’s M&A corporate practice. The event will help students boost their commercial awareness ahead of the firm’s training contract application deadline in July.
The session will focus on one of the largest M&A deals of 2016, Visa Inc’s $18.375bn acquisition of Visa Europe, on which Macfarlanes acted alongside leading US law firm Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz.
On the panel at this latest Commercial Awareness Question Time will be three of the firm’s lawyers of varying levels of seniority who worked on the deal: Nicholas Barclay, the partner who co-led the transaction, mid-level associate solicitor Alice Fuller and newly qualified solicitor Alex Evans (who at the time was one of the trainees involved in the deal).
An audience of up to 50 students will have the opportunity to ask the panel questions about the deal; the scale and complexity of which, as well as the multi-jurisdictional nature, required the Macfarlanes team to use the highest level of strategic thinking and innovative legal advice to overcome a host of challenges.
The panel discussion will run from 6pm to 7pm, after which there will be networking and drinks with the speakers, the firm’s trainees and its graduate recruitment team, until 8.30pm.
Apply to attend here. You’ll be asked to submit a CV and two questions for the panel. The CVs of those offered places will be shared with Macfarlanes’ graduate recruitment team.
Students of all levels are welcome, but places are limited.
