They’ve gone down very well
A new QC has tapped into lawyers’ growing resentment with the Conservatives by making some fetching tote bags.
As our right-wing government continues to restate its commitment to abolishing the Human Rights Act, many left-wingers are concerned about the impact this will have on our protections. Just weeks ago, a number of high-profile lawyers put pen to paper to warn that a post-Brexit “human rights crisis” looms, and even urged the EU to step.
What better way to encapsulate this anti-majoritarianism sentiment than with personalised tote bags? Doughty Street Chambers barrister Caoilfhionn Gallagher QC stuck it to the man this week when she made ‘ACTIVIST LEFT-WING HUMAN RIGHTS LAWYER’ shopper bags for everyone who attended her silk celebration event.
And they’ve gone done very well with her fellow Doughty Street-ers. Children’s rights specialist Mary-Rachel McCabe described the bag as “excellent”:
Thank you @caoilfhionnanna QC for a wonderful party last night. And this excellent bag which I shall wear with pride! pic.twitter.com/mYxKjqsJwd

While legal researcher Sara Siobhan described the barrister as “a brilliant light in dark and chilling times”:
Well @caoilfhionnanna certainly rocked and nailed her Silk Party. A brilliant light in dark and chilling times. pic.twitter.com/OIZVMh3SAk

Gallagher obtained her title this year thanks to her work in the field of human rights and public law. A chambers colleague of Amal Clooney, Gallagher recently appeared in November’s highly publicised Supreme Court abortion case. There, she argued that women living in Northern Ireland are entitled to abortions on the NHS in England. A judgment date has not yet been set, but this is definitely one to watch out for.
