US website’s annual comp features ‘pitch perfect’ video praising outspoken judge
A group of law students have produced a moving musical tribute celebrating the legal life of the late US Supreme Court judge Antonin Scalia.
Each year law schools across the US do battle over who can produce the most creative law-inspired music video as part of an annual ‘Law Revue’ run by Above the Law website. Stepping up to the challenge, aspiring lawyers over at Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law have produced an emotional tearjerker of a track in honour of Antonin Scalia, who passed away earlier this year.
The video entitled “Cite You Again” takes inspiration from American rapper Wiz Khalifa’s number one hit “See You Again”. Students — who can be seen wearing judicial black robes — take it in turns to rap each verse, paying homage to one of the Supreme Court bench’s most conservative — and controversial — judges.
One wannabe lawyer, who just about hits the high notes, sings a chorus of:
It’s been a long term, without you my friend, and I’ll tell you all about it, when I cite you again.
Harvard-educated Scalia — who was a strong proponent of originalism — was famed for his colourful language and lengthy dissents. Kicking off an illustrious legal career at the Ohio office of international law firm Jones Day, Scalia spent time as a law professor at the Universities of Virginia and Chicago.
Appointed to the Supreme Court in 1986 by the then US president Ronald Reagan, Scalia was the first Italian-American justice. He was found dead at a luxury hotel resort in Texas in February, aged 79.
Earlier this month, George Mason University was left red-faced, after it renamed its law faculty the Antonin Scalia School of Law. Staff – much to Legal Cheek’s amusement — failed to spot that when the new name was abbreviated, it would spell ‘ASSoL’.
