Wannabe lawyers have their say about the super-exam
Thirty students gathered at the London office of global law firm King & Wood Mallesons (KWM) last week to express their views about scrapping the Legal Practice Course (LPC) in favour of a new solicitor super-exam.
Answering their questions on the Legal Cheek Careers panel of experts were KWM head of talent David Ball; Sarah Hutchinson, chair of the Academic and Professional Development Committee of the International Bar Association and managing director of Barbri; Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) head of education and training Julie Brannan; and BPP head of LPC programmes Jo-Anne Pugh. Legal Cheek publisher Alex Aldridge chaired the discussion.
Will the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) route survive a new regime where the vocational training route is potentially bundled into law degrees to save students money? How will the proposed changes — which could see aspiring solicitors examined once after uni and again while working — affect training contracts? And should current students hurry through the existing legal education system, or delay until the proposed new system comes in two years from now?
