A former City University law student was handed a seven-year prison sentence today for raping and robbing a prostitute in Luton.

Ali Hafeez had been a star performer on the London university’s LLB course.

But the jury at St Albans Crown Court heard that he harboured violent animosity towards prostitutes.

On 8 June 2013 he enticed a woman into his car, drove to a secluded car park and raped her. He also robbed the woman of £20 and her mobile ‘phone.

According to the website of newspaper Luton On Sunday, Hafeez maintained his father was using the car on the night of the rape. But a jury of eight women and four men did not believe him. Hafeez was also found guilty of a charge of dangerous driving.

Before joining the course at City, Hafeez appeared destined to be a high-flier. He gained five As at A-level, including law, from Luton Sixth Form College. And once on the City course, he participated in a prestigious moot at the Supreme Court.

University officials revealed that Hafeez had been kicked off the law degree course when he was convicted of the rape last October.
