At last — Legal Cheek can reveal the secret behind barristers’ wigs. Young girls with pony fixations will be relieved to hear that the wigs in fact have nothing to do with horsehair. Instead, they have much more of a fungus origin – being in fact mushrooms.
Meet coprinus comatus — the “shaggy mane mushroom”, otherwise known to mushroom fanciers across the globe as the “lawyer’s wig”.
They are found across North America and Europe, and this superb example of the species was posted recently on image-sharing website Instagram. And now that we’ve twigged that barristers’ wigs grow freely in our woodlands, it makes the mark-up charged by the likes of Ede & Ravenscroft look even more outrageous.
