9% of law degree students went to private schools — compared to 29% of medics
New data from the Higher Education Agency shows that undergraduate law degrees are populated by one of the lowest percentage of privately educated students of any subject.
8.7% of undergraduate law students went to private schools, with only art & design, media, computer science and education having fewer privately educated students.
That compared with 28.6% of medical, dentistry and veterinary students having a private education, with those subjects jointly topping the pile. They were followed by history and philosophy, with 21.5% of those degree students being privately educated.
Overall, law as a degree subject came joint 14th — with biology — in the private education table (see below). Note that the figures do not include the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL).
The figures will make awkward reading for City law firms, who are increasingly coming under pressure for their penchant for privately educated graduates.
