Lawyers who’ve come into law from other industries share their experiences; taking place virtually on Wednesday 27 May 2020
Legal Cheek’s latest virtual event is part of a series of virtual events in partnership with The University of Law (ULaw) focusing on how to stay set for success during these unprecedented times.
Taking place in partnership with ULaw on Wednesday 27 May 2020 from 4pm to 6:30pm, ‘How to get into law as a career changer’ features a panel of leading lawyers from firms including Shearman & Sterling and Irwin Mitchell, and commercial barristers’ chambers 2 Temple Gardens, who have come to the law after working in another sector. They will be joined by Husnara Begum, a former magic circle lawyer and careers coach, alongside a ULaw careers expert. The session will be chaired by a Legal Cheek journalist.
Time: 4pm to 6:30pm
Location: Virtual event
Level: Students, Graduates
The speakers will answer audience questions in a Question Time-style panel discussion running from 4pm to 5:15pm. They will also share the secrets to their own success, while advising attendees on how they can best position themselves to obtain training contracts and pupillages. They will look, too, to the future and give their views on what changes we can expect in the legal market at this time.
The speakers
- Paul Gascoyne, senior recruitment manager, Shearman & Sterling
- Daniel Hedley, partner, Irwin Mitchell
- Jack Harris, barrister, 2 Temple Gardens
- Suzanne Hutton, careers consultant and family lawyer, The University of Law

Afterwards there will a virtual mini law fair with the speakers, trainees and graduate recruitment team members from their firms, as well as members of the ULaw employability team.
