Thursday 21 February at ULaw Bristol; open to all students
Legal Cheek is coming to Bristol next week for the latest in its series of Secrets to Success events — in association with The University of Law (ULaw) — to help students boost their commercial awareness as they apply for vacation schemes and training contracts.
The session takes place on the evening of Thursday 21 February from 5:30pm until 8:30pm at ULaw Bristol, and features a panel of leading lawyers: James Sutherland, a disputes and litigation partner at Burges Salmon; Claire Revell, a senior associate in RPC‘s insurance team; Chris Towner, a partner in Womble Bond Dickinson‘s energy team; and ULaw Bristol and Exeter campus dean Zoe King.
The quartet will share the secrets to their own success, while also advising students on how they can best position themselves to obtain training contracts with leading firms. They will look, too, to the future and give their views on what changes we can expect in the legal market.
After the Question Time-style discussion, which will be chaired by a Legal Cheek journalist, there will be drinks and networking with the speakers and a collection of the firms’ trainees and members of their graduate recruitment teams. Apply to attend.
Speakers
James Sutherland, Burges Salmon
James Sutherland is a partner in Burges Salmon’s disputes and litigation department, specialising in real estate disputes and insolvency disputes relating to real estate assets and professional negligence claims.
Claire Revell, RPC
Claire Revell is an insurance litigator for RPC who specialises in defending professionals in professional negligence claims and advising insurers on policy coverage. She has acted for a range of professionals, including accountants, construction professionals and brokers but currently focusses on defending lawyers.
Chris Towner, Womble Bond Dickinson
Chris Towner specialises in the commercial aspects of energy projects. He spent six years in the energy and projects team at Herbert Smith Freehills, advising a range of investment banks and public sector clients in relation to a wide range of issues connected with the UK electricity and gas markets. Since joining the Womble Bond Dickinson in 2006, Towner has specialised in advising renewable energy projects. He also chairs the RenewableUK Offshore wind delivery group.
Zoe King, ULaw
Zoe King trained and worked as a solicitor at Burges Salmon in Bristol before joining ULaw in 2011 — a year after the Bristol Centre first opened. She has been instrumental in the delivery of the LPC and GDL programmes to students across the Bristol and Exeter campuses, and previously was student lead for the GDL and LLB programmes.
