Trainees also handed pay boosts
Eversheds Sutherland has upped the salaries of its newly qualified (NQ) lawyers.
The transatlantic firm, which takes on around 50 trainees each year, confirmed that newbie associates at its London headquarters will now receive £72,000 a year, up £8,000 (or 13%) from the previous salary of £64,000. Legal Cheek’s Firms Most List shows that this puts them a full £1,000 ahead of their opposite numbers at K&L Gates, Simmons & Simmons and Taylor Wessing.
The 66-office outfit has chucked money at its trainees too. Those in their first year now receive £40,000, an increase of £3,000 (8%), while trainees a year ahead are £5,000 (13%) better off on a salary of £43,500.
There were rises in the regions too. Eversheds NQs outside London are now on a salary of £42,500 — that’s an extra £1,000 or 2% — while first year regional trainees are also a grand better off on £27,000. Provincial trainees in year two receive £29,500 — an increase of £2,000, or 7%.

Meanwhile, Covington & Burling has also bumped NQ pay. According to reports, NQs at the US law firm will start lawyer life on a six-figure salary of £100,000, up from £95,000. This equates to a rise of 5%. Trainees in their first year earn £43,000, rising to £47,000 in their second year.
