Tells Legal Cheek short clips help busy students digest news without trawling pages of the FT
A second-year law student at the University of York has told Legal Cheek that he thinks his new, quick-fire commercial awareness-focused YouTube channel is a great way for law students to prep for interviews.
Ludo Lugnani is the man behind The Business Update, a YouTube channel that posts short videos every working day summing up recent commercial goings-on. The one-and-a-half-minute clips cover topics including: Philip Hammond’s spring statement, the buoyancy of high street retailers and the impact of interest rate increases.
Lugnani — who is from Milan, Italy, and is seeking a training contract — tells us the stresses of a law degree mean many students struggle to read the news, yet commercial awareness is a key skill firms are looking for. But how does he find the time to research and produce the videos? He says:
“The videos only take me 40 minutes to an hour to make, and, being the captain of my university’s volleyball team, I’m used to setting aside time outside of my degree.”
Of course, making these videos isn’t purely altruistic as it benefits Lugnani too. “By teaching somebody, you learn a lot yourself”, plus: “It’s something a bit different, so it’s something I can talk about in training contract interviews.”
Lugnani’s plan is to keep up his YouTubeing pursuits, even during busy periods (“consistency is key”). He hopes to share the channel with his fellow law students, to build up a larger viewership.
