It’s red faces all round at the Judicial Office, after an embarrassing email slip-up resulted in a newly-appointed female senior coroner being referred to as a man.

In an email fired off earlier this week, the Judicial Office revealed that Clare Bailey has been appointed as senior coroner for the Teesside area.

Unfortunately the announcement stated that Bailey would be taking up “his” appointment immediately. A rather embarrassing error that Doughty Street Chambers barrister Caoilfhionn Gallagher was quick to point out.

Describing the typo as “unfortunate”, Gallagher — who is a public law specialist — said that the email gaffe “suggests” that female appointments are “unexpected”, while male ones are considered the “norm”.

And the latest stats lend themselves to Gallagher’s point of view. According to judicial diversity stats released earlier this year, just 21% of Court of Appeal judges are female.

As an amusing aside, the email — which the Judicial Office will be keen to forget — also managed to spell Teesside incorrectly.
