Does age matter when it comes to applying for training contracts?

I just don’t know what I’m supposed to do about it

In the latest instalment in our Career Conundrums series, one aspiring lawyer asks whether his age is holding him back in that elusive training contract hunt.

I’m a 31-year-old man looking for a training contract in a bigger (i.e. regional, national or silver circle) law firm. I feel like my age is a big problem. I’ve been told it doesn’t matter, but it doesn’t feel that way judging by conversations I’ve had with law firms. By way of background, I have a 2:1 undergraduate degree, a distinction in my GDL, and a career in teaching, PR and business. Is it my age that’s holding me back from finding a training contract, and if so what am I supposed to do to combat this?
