Linklaters latest magic circle firm to release newly-qualified retention rate – 91% stay on

Only Clifford Chance remains silent on which qualifying trainees will be lucky or sad

Linklaters today became the latest magic circle law firm to release its newly-qualified retention figures for the beginning of the year — with 91% of its former trainees staying with the firm.

The rate represents a slight drop on last autumn, when 93% of NQs cut the Links’ mustard. But it is much improved on the more comparable figure for last spring, when only 86% of the qualifiers were kept on.

The latest figure — which saw 49 of the 54 NQs being offered jobs — puts Linklaters below fellow City global giant Allen & Overy, which has announced a 93% rate, but well above rivals Slaughter and May (88%) and Freshfields (85%).

Linklaters announced that it received 51 applications from a qualifying group of 54; 49 offers were made, all of which were accepted.

Partner Nick Rumsby, commented on the recruitment process:

“We are delighted that we have been able to yet again retain so many of our extremely talented trainees, especially given that the number of trainees starting their training with us has remained consistent.

“This very good retention rate reflects both the confidence we have in our trainees and the levels of busyness within the firm.”

Clifford Chance remains the only magic circle player still keeping its NQ retention figures under wraps.
