As the Law Society’s Black History Month celebrations got underway on Monday, it was a surprise to see this picture of disgraced barrister-turned-politician Baron Taylor of Warwick among those on display at the body’s Chancery Lane headquarters.
With many worthier black lawyers of note to choose from, the decision to highlight Taylor – who was jailed for 12 months last May for false expenses, and has since been permanently disbarred from practising as a barrister – was a bizarre one.
The Law Society said the picture had been used in error. A spokesperson commented:
“OK – you caught us using an old exhibition, which we ought to have checked more carefully. We’ve now removed the picture of Lord Taylor, but if our oversight has helped Legal Cheek to promote Black History Month to its aficionados then all is not lost!”
